visit the winter flower bulbs

After the first frost or snow storm, you might assume that your bulb-planting days are over. But as long as the ground is workable, you can plant bulbs! Visit the grounds and see what went from ‘under to over,’ from below soil to basking in the Spring sunshine.

Pick-a-Petunia basket (great for Mother’s Day!)

As a part of their Horticulture unit and yearly fundraiser, Bowers Academy students work incredibly hard to plant and manage these baskets. From strategically choosing the types of flowers, soil, fertilizer, irrigation methods, and creating a marketing plan for sales - purchasing a basket means a lot to these students! The money raised goes towards supporting their leadership activities and hands-on field trips.

Visit the horses and ponies

A favorite of many visitors, stop by the horse barn and interact with the farm animal that is herald as the single most important discovery for the advancement of human civilization. From transportation, to preforming hard work, to companionship, the contribution of this majestic animal is unmatched.

Milk a goat

You may think of the animals that goes “moo” when you’re pouring your glass of milk, but worldwide goats milk is consumed more widely. With yields up to 1.5 gallons per day, goats are a staple at the Bowers School Farm.

Check out the chickens

There are more chickens in the world than any other bird. In fact, more than 50 billion chickens are reared annually as a source of food, for both their meat and their eggs. Come observe the mobile chicken coop, and learn about how they are raised and the whole (poultry) process! After, buy some fresh farm eggs at the Farm Store.

Moo with the Angus cattle 

One of the most popular breed of beef cattle in the United States, meet the cows and calves that graze the grass fields. They may be be as exited to see humans as the goats but if you’re lucky enough to get up close, their massive size and calm nature is impressive.

Feel the wool on the sheep 

Staying warm and dry in the winter is paramount to the health of our sheep. Find out how soft the “ovis aries” really is. With over 1 billion sheep kept domestically world-wide, this is one of the most popular farm animals for its many uses.
